Maritime Shipping

Maritime shipping accounts for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and current alternative fuels are difficult to transport, safely handle, store, or produce.

Found Energy’s modular fuel packs are designed to safely produce carbon-free power on-demand at an energy density and price that can compete with fossil fuels. Found’s containerized systems can utilize existing port infrastructure and directly replace existing diesel generators, for example.

In partnership with Found Energy, ocean carriers will be better equipped to meet IMO emission reduction targets with low operational interference or costs.

Aluminum Industry

Greenhouse gas emissions from the aluminum industry account for 2% of global emissions, the majority of which result from fossil fuels used to supply electricity and process heat. At the same time, there is a secondary problem around low utilization of certain aluminum waste streams. Beyond declining societal recycling habits, waste utilization rates are reduced due to alloy impurities, surface contamination, and inclusion of bulk non-aluminum materials, causing millions of tons of aluminum to be landfilled or exported each year.

Found Energy’s core technology can turn low-grade aluminum waste into fuel on-site, enabling our partners to reduce their carbon footprint and save on cost, while simultaneously improving the overall efficiency of the aluminum ecosystem and reducing landfilled or exported aluminum waste. Additionally, Found’s high quality green aluminum hydroxide byproduct can feed alumina refineries, thereby reducing mining operations, eliminating industrial waste (“red mud”), and minimizing the environmental impact of an otherwise dirty process.

Fertilizer Synthesis

One of the major uses of hydrogen today is the production of ammonia for fertilizers. The hydrogen used in this process is mostly produced by steam methane reforming which is highly carbon intensive and responsible for >1% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Similar to long-haul trucking, fertilizer plants located far from renewables must either transport ammonia, which is highly toxic, or transport hydrogen via conventional means, which are dangerous and have a low volumetric energy density. Found’s technology provides an alternative solution that is capable of delivering this hydrogen without these issues.

Long Haul Trucking

The use of hydrogen to decarbonize long-haul trucking is held back by difficulties in transporting and storing hydrogen by conventional means. Refueling stations not connected directly to renewable energy sources will require regular hydrogen deliveries, and today’s alternatives are prohibitively expensive, have low volumetric energy density, or are unsafe for this application.

At a hydrogen storage density of 11.1 wt% and 300 g H2/L, aluminum is one of the most energy dense hydrogen carriers. Found’s on-site hydrogen generation technology eliminates safety concerns and enables simpler logistics for bringing clean energy to this application.
